Mediaset España has received a new judicial blow in the long battle for the rights of Pasapalabra, after the Audiencia Provincial de Madrid has set at 73.2 million euros the compensation it must pay to the British production company ITV Studios for the profits obtained between 2012 and 2019 for the broadcast of the format without the full rights of the contest.
The resolution comes after an extensive litigation that dates back years and that has had several key turns, including the ruling of the Tribunal Supremo which already in 2019 forced Mediaset to withdraw the program from its schedule. Now, the new judicial order partially upholds ITV's appeal and raises the initial amount of 44.3 million considering, among other factors, the advertising impact and the audience pull effect that the contest generated in the rest of the programming.
The case is part of the open war over the ownership of El Rosco, the most emblematic final test of the program. The Supremo has recently recognized that said part of the contest belongs to MC&F, which opens the door for Atresmedia to continue broadcasting the main format of Pasapalabra on Antena 3, but without including that final segment, while Mediaset studies new formulas to reuse the mechanics in future contests.
