Movistar Plus+ faces a new stage with the intention of expanding its national production and increasing the pace of premieres. The company presented this Sunday, within the framework of the San Sebastián International Film Festival, its main projects for the coming months and advanced a program that combines new fictions, second seasons, and documentaries.

The event was attended by Alfonso Gómez Palacio, CEO of Movistar Plus, and Juan Andrés García Ropero, 'Bropi', content director, accompanied by journalist María Gómez. The company put on the table a strategy focused especially on Spanish talent and the incorporation of new creators and production companies.

Gómez Palacio defended the intention of maintaining the differential character of Movistar Plus and, at the same time, reaching a larger audience. The platform intends to do so through original productions, both cinematographic and television, without giving up incorporating content from other major operators.

For his part, 'Bropi' explained that the content team has intensified direct contact with professionals in the sector. As he detailed, they have already held meetings with more than fifty creators to learn about new projects and expand the platform's catalog.

Among the announced objectives is to reach a rhythm of two Spanish series per month, in addition to reinforcing the presence of national cinema with new premieres.

The premieres remaining in 2026

The final stretch of 2026 will feature three of the Spanish productions that Movistar Plus considers priorities.

The first will be El castillo, which will arrive on October 8. The series, created by Isabel Peña, Eduardo Villanueva, and Elena Martín Gimeno, delves into an investigation related to the sexual exploitation of women in roadside clubs. The plot follows Liesa, played by Omar Ayuso, a young police officer who has just joined the UCRIF. Together with Inspector Osés, played by Laia Marull, he will begin to investigate a situation that affects several establishments and points to an exploitation network. Raúl Arévalo and Valentina Vidal complete part of the main cast.

In November, the return of Celeste with a second season is scheduled. Diego San José once again places the character played by Carmen Machi, tax inspector Sara Santano, before a new case related to a well-known footballer and his tax obligations.

The third big bet announced for this year will be Killing a Bear, scheduled for December. The Cabezudo brothers are behind this fiction, which starts from the mysterious death of the bear Cachou in the Aran Valley during the confinement period due to the pandemic.

A 2027 full of new projects

The programming advanced for 2027 considerably expands the number of productions underway.

Among the new series is Ardora, directed by Jorge Coira and starring Carolina Yuste and Javier Gutiérrez. Also arriving will be Veredicto, a production created by Eduard Sola, Pol Cortecans and Daniel González based on an original idea by Carles Porta. The cast of the latter includes names such as Nagore Aranburu, Ernesto Alterio, Alba Flores, Omar Ayuso, Secun de la Rosa and Alfredo Castro.

Another of the announced titles is Todo lo necesario, a project by Marcel Barrena and Alberto Marini with David Verdaguer, Enric Auquer, Marina Salas and Mónica López as protagonists.

Added to these is Iruña 97, based on an original idea by Natxo López and headed by Clara Galle and Álvaro Cervantes.

The platform is also preparing new installments of some of its well-known series. This is the case of Se tiene que morir mucha gente, El Centro and El otro lado, which will have a second season. Precisely, the latter will feature a particularly striking addition: Andreu Buenafuente will participate in the new batch of episodes. It will be one of his first television appearances after his temporary withdrawal from activity for medical reasons in 2025. The comedian had meanwhile maintained his presence in the podcast Nadie sabe nada.

Three new series that expand the catalog

In addition to the titles that were already in development, Movistar Plus took advantage of its presentation in San Sebastián to announce three new productions.

One of them will be La náufraga, written and directed by Fernando León de Aranoa, who will also participate in the production alongside Jaume Roures and Patricia de Muns. The series will star Belén Cuesta.

The second proposal will be set in Barcelona in 1991, in the months leading up to the celebration of the Olympic Games. The fiction will follow the preparations for that historical event and will be created by Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor, responsible for La vida breve. The announced cast brings together David Verdaguer, Paula Malia, Silvia Abril, Andreu Buenafuente, Maria León, Álex Brendemühl, Pau Durá and Jorge Usón.

The third novelty will be named Los Moriarti and will involve the incorporation of those responsible for titles such as Maspalomas, Marco and La trinchera infinita into Movistar Plus's fiction. The project will also bear the seal of Carles Porta and will star Anna Castillo, Pol López and Eduard Fernández.

More documentaries and new projects with Bayona

The platform's production will not be limited to fiction series. In the documentary section, several titles focused on real stories are also being prepared.

Among them are El otro Chiquito, El gordo de Villamanín and Call me Bibi. Movistar Plus has indicated that these productions seek to combine investigation, emotion, and a unique perspective on their protagonists and events.

In addition, the company is currently working on two projects that will have J. A. Bayona as executive producer, although their details have not yet been revealed.

Female talent, among the priorities

The new strategy also contemplates reinforcing the presence of female creators within its catalog. The company has cited previous works such as Vida perfecta, by Leticia Dolera; Se tiene que morir mucha gente, by Victoria Martín; Esto no es Suecia, by Aina Clotet, or El castillo, by Isabel Peña.

In this context is also Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, responsible for Querer or Los Domingos, one of the platform's most recognized Spanish fictions in recent years. The director is preparing 60K, a new series set in the OnlyFans universe.

'Ilustres Ignorantes' turns 20

The celebration of the new programming also made space for one of Movistar Plus's most veteran formats. Ilustres Ignorantes will turn 20 and the platform is preparing a special tour through different Spanish cities. The intention is to move the program out of the studio and turn the celebration into a traveling show.

During the presentation, there was also a remembrance for Javier Cansado, who is temporarily away from the program while undergoing cancer treatment. His place is being occupied during this period by Raúl Cimas.
