Sarah Santaolalla explodes against the president of the bishops after linking Pride with "the sin of Satan": "What is sin is violating children"

The words of the president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference and archbishop of Valladolid, Luis Argüello, embroiled in recent controversies over his comments towards the Government, linked LGTBI+ Pride with "the sin of Satan", which sparked an intense debate on Malas Lenguas on TVE. After hearing his statements, Sarah Santaolalla responded with a forceful plea in defense of the LGTBI+ collective and lashed out at the ecclesiastical institution for cases of sexual abuse committed by members of the Church.

The origin of the controversy was the archbishop's statements, who affirmed: "Today it is called LGTBI++ Pride Territory, so that everything fits. There is a deconstruction as a maximum, proud expression. How good about pride, proud... Because that is the sin of Satan, pride, to say, I can be whatever I want". After reproducing his words, Jesús Cintora opened the debate at the table.

Cintora decided to speak harshly, before giving the floor to collaborator Sarah Santaolalla: "Everyone can love whoever they want. What is a sin is abusing minors, for example. That is a sin and there have been quite a few cases. But one can love whoever they want as long as they do it within the rules. For example, doing it with minors, that is bad. Man, Sin of Satan..."

Santaolalla went further and criticized the moral authority of part of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. "I believe that the sin of Satan, indeed, is raping children. I believe that the Church itself should exercise ethics. Many bishops and many priests, many members who are inside giving lessons, should do it, who when you turn around some of them get very close to the kids at a mass. I believe that the sin of Satan is staying and being the biggest owner of furniture, of houses, and seeing the heritage that the Church has when in this country there are many people who do not have a roof and have nothing to eat", she affirmed.

Furthermore, she defended the celebration of Pride and denounced the contradiction that, in her opinion, exists in some discourses of the Church: "There are many priests and bishops who now attack the LGTBI community and try to give lessons and then, behind the scenes, even openly, they enjoy it. I ask the Church and some priests for fewer complexes and more celebrations and more demanding".

During the debate, fellow collaborator Pepe Apazarena clarified that the archbishop was referring to pride as a sin and not specifically to the LGTBI+ community, although Santaolalla insisted that the real problem is the sexual abuse committed within the Church and the lack of accountability.  "A few because... yes, yes. A few who have sexually assaulted children, that historically the focus has never been placed on the victims of pedophile priests and that then they have not paid for it before Justice," he concluded.
