Galician filmmaker Óliver Laxe experienced one of the most significant moments of his career this weekend with the presence of 'Sirāt' at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, where the film competed with two nominations: best foreign-language film and best original score.

The film, produced by Movistar Plus+, arrived in Los Angeles after an appealing international tour that began at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize, and continued with several awards at different festivals. Its run at the Golden Globes thus confirmed its status as one of the most relevant Spanish titles of the year on the international scene today.

Finally, Sirāt did not manage to win any statuettes. The Golden Globe for best foreign-language film went to 'Aquarius', by Brazilian Kleber Mendonça Filho, while the award for best original score — a category in which French composer Kangding Ray competed for his work on Sirāt — went to Ludwig Göransson for 'Oppenheimer'. Despite this, the double nomination is already a milestone for Spanish cinema, which had not seen a similar presence at these awards since Juan Antonio Bayona's 'Society of the Snow'.

Laxe's film, a cinematic gamble with a strong sensory charge and set in the desert, has stood out for its risky way of addressing an unusual dimension of the characters, far from the most conventional narrative codes. This proposal, marked by a spiritual gaze and a radical staging, has managed to capture the attention of the American industry despite moving outside the usual margins of the awards circuit. In the days leading up to the gala, the Galician director participated in special screenings and meetings with academics in Los Angeles, where Sirāt received the public endorsement of filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro.

Although he returns to Spain without Golden Globes, Sirāt maintains his aspirations intact for the 2026 Oscars, where he has been shortlisted in five categories. His time in Hollywood thus reinforces Óliver Laxe's international projection and consolidates Sirāt as one of the most unique and recognized offerings in recent Spanish cinema.
