The 25th anniversary of 'Operación Triunfo' is left without a celebration: what happened for the tribute to be canceled?

The lack of agreements with some of the best-known artists, the difficulties in financing the project, and the discomfort of numerous former contestants have frustrated the event planned to commemorate the format's 25th anniversary

Operación Triunfo celebrates this Thursday, October 22, a quarter of a century since the broadcast of its first gala, but the anniversary arrives marked by unexpected news for its followers: the great event with which the anniversary was intended to be celebrated will not go ahead. The event, which had already been postponed to 2027, has ended up being discarded after accumulating production, financing, and organizational difficulties, according to Vanitatis.

The initial idea was to gather the participants from the different stages of the contest in a tribute to the history of the format. Tinet Rubira, director of Gestmusic, had announced in April that the production company was preparing a special celebration and, subsequently, stated that the invitation would be extended to the 208 contestants who have passed through the 13 editions, in addition to teachers, jury members, and other figures linked to the program.

From the scheduled date to the definitive postponement

Expectation grew during the following months, to the point that information circulated placing the recording of the special in Madrid on October 23. However, in early October, it emerged that the production company had decided to postpone it due to production issues and the lack of time to prepare an event of that dimension.

Among the dates considered was February 11, 2027, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the final of the first edition, in which Rosa López was proclaimed winner. Finally, the difficulties in concretizing the format and ensuring the participation of some of its protagonists would have prevented the project from moving forward.

The difficulty of bringing together the protagonists of the first edition

The tribute had initially been planned as a reunion of the contestants of OT 1, in a formula reminiscent of the special that TVE organized in 2016 for the program's 15th anniversary. That celebration included three documentaries and a concert at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona.

However, bringing together the main faces of that first edition again would have been complicated due to their professional and personal commitments. According to the information published by Vanitatis, the lack of availability of some of the names with the greatest media pull was added to the production and financing problems that ultimately frustrated the initiative.

The relationship between the former companions has also changed over time. Some maintain close ties, but there is no longer a single group that brings together all participants. In fact, the sources cited by the media assure that a joint private celebration to commemorate the anniversary would not even have been considered.

Rosa López expresses her disappointment and other contestants also distance themselves

Rosa López, winner of the first edition, publicly expressed her disillusionment with the way the anniversary was being managed. In a video released on her social networks, she explained that she had decided to reject some proposals related to the celebration.

The singer pointed out that she usually accepts invitations even when she does not get paid for them, even if that means giving up other professional opportunities. For this reason, she questioned that the artists of the first edition received recurring calls to participate in events linked to the contest without, in her opinion, it making sense to take their availability for granted.

His stance found the support of other colleagues, such as Manu Tenorio and Mireia Montávez. In addition, according to Vanitatis, other artists who emerged from the different editions also had no plans to reserve their agendas for the event.

Added to this discomfort was that of the contestants who claimed not to have received any communication. Some considered that the call should have been managed in a more organized and transparent way, especially since blocking a date without firm information could prevent them from accepting other jobs.

A celebration that ends up becoming a reason for disagreement

The lack of definition of the format, the economic and production problems, and the difficulties in having some of the best-known artists ended up compromising the viability of the tribute. The absence of highly renowned names could also reduce interest in the event and hinder its financing.

The cancellation has thus generated discontent that goes beyond the loss of the celebration. Many of the participants learned of the changes through the media and questioned both the management of the invitations and the lack of information during the process.

What began as a call to celebrate the history of Operación Triunfo ends, 25 years after its first gala, marked by uncertainty and discomfort on the part of those who were part of the contest.

Tinet Rubira and Noemí Galera celebrate 25 years of OT

Amid the controversy, Tinet Rubira and Noemí Galera have published messages on social media to remember the format's trajectory, thank those who have been part of it, and celebrate its continuity.

"Today marks 25 years since my professional life has been linked to @OT_Oficial. They have flown by. I thank this format for everything it has given me. I also want to thank everyone who has been part of this adventure over the years: team, contestants, teachers, and judges. ALL," wrote Rubira, director of Gestmusic, in his publication. For her part, Noemí Galera recalled that, 25 years after that first gala, the team is already preparing the fourteenth edition of the contest. "Thanks to all of you who were part of OT1 and the following ones. Thanks to the viewers who are still with us. Long live OT!" expressed the director of the Academy.

Beyond whether the reunion takes place or not, the truth is that keeping a program like Operación Triunfo alive for 25 years is, in itself, a reason for celebration. A quarter of a century after its premiere, the format continues to attract viewers, bringing together new generations and giving rise to new editions, a trajectory that goes far beyond a specific tribute.
