The San Sebastián International Film Festival has unveiled a significant part of the Spanish presence in its 74th edition, which will be held from September 18 to 26. A total of 25 national productions and co-productions, including feature films and series, will be part of the festival's program, with names such as Javier Ruiz Caldera, Fernando Trueba, Daniel Monzón, Mikel Gurrea, David Pérez Sañudo, and Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo.
RTVE and Atresmedia will once again have a prominent presence at the festival. The public corporation will participate with four productions: Ruega por nosotras (Pray for Us) and Sacamantecas, which will be screened in Special Screenings of the Official Section; Esta soledad (This Solitude), included in New Directors; and Lejos de los árboles (Far from the Trees), which will be part of Zabaltegi-Tabakalera. For its part, Atresmedia Cine will attend the festival with three titles: El mal padre (The Bad Father), which will compete for the Golden Shell; La bola negra (The Black Ball), by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, which will be exhibited in Perlak after its run at Cannes; and Karateka, by Aritz Moreno, which will have its premiere at the Velodrome.
Three Spanish productions will compete for the Golden Shell in the Official Section. These are El mal padre (The Bad Father), by Roberto Bueso, starring Eduard Fernández; Cinco minutos más (Five More Minutes), Javier Ruiz Caldera's new fantastic comedy, with Berto Romero, Belén Cuesta, and Javier Cámara; and Sants, by Mikel Gurrea, led by Victoria Luengo and Ariadna Gil.
Out of competition, in the Special Screenings section, will be presented Azken Agurra (The Last Farewell), by Koldo Almandoz; Ruega por nosotras (Pray for Us), by Daniel Monzón, set in the Women's Protection Board during the seventies; Bajañí, Fernando Trueba's new documentary work focused on the figure of Niño Josele; Sacamantecas, David Pérez Sañudo's historical thriller starring Antonio de la Torre and Patricia López Arnaiz; and the series Más allá de la sociedad (Beyond Society), inspired by the 1974 Andes air tragedy.
The program will also include the out-of-competition premiere of the series El castillo (The Castle), directed by Elena Martín Gimeno and Sandra Romero, while the Perlak section will host the first screening in Spain of La bola negra (The Black Ball), by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, after its recognition at the Cannes Film Festival.
New Directors will feature Esta soledad, by Javier Giner; El mal hijo, the directorial debut of actor Jaime Lorente; and the Spanish-Ukrainian co-production Siben Trage Februar, by Tatjana Moutchnik. For its part, Zabaltegi-Tabakalera will exhibit Lejos de los árboles, by Meritxell Colell; Jaleos, by Isaki Lacuesta; and Hamalau Gau, by Oskar Alegría.
The Velodrome will also reserve space for Spanish cinema with Karateka, by Aritz Moreno, inspired by Olympic champion Sandra Sánchez, and Muguruza FM 40 Tour, a documentary dedicated to Fermín Muguruza's forty-year musical career.
The announcement also served to honor José Luis Rebordinos in his last official act in Madrid as director of the festival, before handing over the reins to Maialen Beloki, who will assume the direction of the San Sebastián Festival starting on January 1, 2027.
