This is how Los Javis reacted with "shock" upon learning that 'The Black Ball' will represent Spain at the Oscars: "We are going to give our all"

Los Javis did not expect to experience one of the most important moments of their career this way. Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi were in Toronto when they learned that La bola negra had been chosen to represent Spain in the race for the 2027 Oscars. The news caught them together, and the emotion was immediate.

Los Javis followed the moment from a mobile phone alongside actors Milo Quifes and Carlos González. In the video shared on social media, the team can be seen watching the screen as the title chosen by the academics is revealed. And, as soon as they hear the name of La bola negra, the celebration began.

The reaction was immediate. During a video call with Spanish media, Ambrossi admitted to being "in shock" and "trembling". "It's very emotional for us, it really means a lot," he assured, while Calvo celebrated the opportunity and focused on the personal meaning of the story they have brought to the big screen.

"Lately I've been thinking a lot about my grandparents, in the end La bola negra is their story and our recent one. It's incredible that the history of Spain and all our culture is so interesting," explained Calvo. The director also highlighted that the film addresses a "wound that is still very recent." Emotion now mixes with the desire to face the challenge. "We are going to work our hearts out to get as far as possible. Thank you very much for your trust. Here we go," said Calvo.

Ambrossi: "I'm going to give it a lot of fire"

Ambrossi also did not want to hide the ambition with which they face this new stage. The director asked for the support of the Spanish public and assured that the country's involvement can be decisive in promoting the film during its international journey.

"With the support of my country, I am going to give much more fire to the matter. From today on, I am going to allow myself the luxury of thinking that it is possible," he said. The directors are aware that the path to the Oscars will be long and demanding. "We know that we are going to live in a suitcase for several months. It will be hard, little rest, but it's all so that the film goes as far as possible," explained Calvo.

The news also comes after an especially emotional reception at the Toronto Festival. "Yesterday was a magical night, what happened in the theater was incredible, the ovation, how people looked at us. They were crying, something very magical was felt," recalled the filmmaker. For Los Javis, that La bola negra now reaches the Oscars also means taking a story deeply linked to their identity and memory outside of Spain. "What a year for Spanish cinema," celebrated Calvo, who also wanted to remember "the other nominated films" and acknowledge the work of their competitors.

Now the international race begins. The film must pass the first cut of the Hollywood Academy, known as the shortlist, before knowing if it finally manages to become one of the nominees for Best International Feature Film.

Meanwhile, Los Javis already know how to face the journey: with emotion, with ambition and, as Ambrossi says, with "a lot of fire." Calvo and Ambrossi face this new stage with the greatest enthusiasm and without hiding the magnitude of the challenge. "We are going to give our all," they assured after learning that their film will be the Spanish representative.

The announcement now opens a new stage for La bola negra. The film will have to overcome the following selection phases of the Hollywood Academy to try to become one of the nominees for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
