The strike by public school teachers in Madrid reached the set of 'La tarde de Telemadrid' this Tuesday. Four teachers who were among the audience interrupted the live broadcast to explain their demands and ask for their protest to be heard. The presenter, Christian Gálvez, criticized the way they accessed the program and the channel went to commercial break.
The scene occurred when Gálvez was about to open a debate on whether it is better to shower in the morning or at night. At that moment, the teachers, dressed in green t-shirts in defense of public education, took the floor to the presenter's surprise.
¡Y seguimos! 😏 pic.twitter.com/F1EVI2RQGo

"We are the striking teachers who have come to visit you at Telemadrid and we believe that the counselor is not paying attention to us. Perhaps on public television we will get some attention," explained one of them. Another teacher recalled that they have just started their fourth week of strike and tried to present their demands to the Minister of Education, Mercedes Zarzalejo, and to the Government of Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
Gálvez interrupted them to reproach them for the way they entered the program. "I thank you, but I don't think it's the right time and I don't think the methods you have used to do this are correct," he said. The presenter assured that he defends public education, but insisted to the teachers that "this is not your space."
While the teachers continued to try to intervene, the presenter repeatedly asked the production team to "cut to me" and stood in front of the cameras. He then recounted that he began studying teaching and stated that no teacher had "deceived" him as, according to him, the participants in the protest had done. Immediately after, Telemadrid cut the broadcast to go to commercial.
Upon returning, Gálvez apologized to the audience for the moment experienced. The presenter assured that he did not want to evaluate who was right in the conflict and again questioned the way in which the teachers had brought their protest to the live broadcast.
The indefinite strike in non-university public education began on October 14. Among the demands of the organizers are the reduction of teaching hours and the number of students per classroom, more support staff, and a salary improvement. The strike committee demands a negotiation with Zarzalejo regarding their demands.
Ayuso's government counselor has considered the cost of the requests "unaffordable" and maintains that there are open negotiation tables. For its part, the committee insists that the Ministry must sit down to negotiate with its representatives the list of demands approved by the teaching staff.
