The Civil Guard appeared this Wednesday at the Cádiz Provincial Council to request documentation on sponsorship contracts linked to concerts and festivals. The action affects the Area of Planning, Coordination and Strategic Development, which depends on Germán Beardo, mayor of the Popular Party (PP) in El Puerto de Santa María, fourth vice-president of the provincial institution and deputy responsible for the area.
The agents went to the Roma Building, one of the Provincial Council's headquarters, as part of a judicial investigation declared secret. According to the information known so far, the case investigates a possible crime of money laundering related to a businessman from El Puerto dedicated to hospitality and the organization of musical events.
The operation began early in El Puerto de Santa María, where the Civil Guard searched offices and businesses linked to businessman Pascual Llopis, promoter of concerts and festivals in the province. Afterwards, investigators requested several public sponsorship contract files related to these events from the Provincial Council.
The provincial government, chaired by the PP, has assured that the institution's staff provided "maximum collaboration" and facilitated all the information required by the agents. The spokesperson for the Provincial Council, Juancho Ortiz, explained that the Civil Guard came from Seville and that the request was limited to administrative files within an ongoing investigation.
Beardo has also addressed the information about the operation. The mayor of El Puerto has denied that there was a search in his office and has assured that the agents requested five public sponsorship contract files related to concerts organized by the investigated businessman. According to his version, he went to the Roma Building "without being requested" to support the technical staff and then left the headquarters as his presence was not necessary.
The investigation would also have led the agents to collect documentation from other administrations with contracts linked to the same events, including the Ministry of Tourism of the Junta de Andalucía. For now, the case remains under secrecy and no arrests or investigated political officials have been reported.
The search has opened a new political front in Cádiz. The provincial PSOE has asked the PP for explanations and demanded “maximum transparency” regarding the contracts under investigation. Izquierda Unida has also demanded a response from the president of the Provincial Council, Almudena Martínez del Junco, and the provincial government team.
