The PNV and EH Bildu have staged a new political coincidence this Friday with the publication of a joint declaration in which they demand "the political recognition of the Basque nation" and defend a new relationship between Euskadi and the State based on bilaterality, mutual respect, and a new legal-political framework that, they maintain, reflects the democratic will of the Basque citizenry.

In the document, both formations assure that Euskadi needs greater political recognition and a new legal status that places self-government "at the height of current challenges." Furthermore, they reiterate that the Basque citizenry has the right to decide "freely and democratically" its political future and defend that this will should not be conditioned by "legal limits, political interpretations, or reasons of State."

The text arrives on a date full of symbolism, as this Sunday, PNV and Bildu will share an event in Bergara to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the abolition of the Fueros and the 50th anniversary of the Bergara Mayors' Movement, which met in 1976 in that same Gipuzkoan town. Both formations consider that the disappearance of the foral regime in 1876 meant the loss of political recognition of Euskadi as a subject of self-government.

In that same text, both parties emphasize that their demand does not seek to recover a past model, but rather to "embody the spirit of self-government contained in the fueros, adapted to current times." With that objective, they advocate for the creation of new political instruments that, in their opinion, will allow Euskadi's decision-making capacity to be strengthened and respond to present challenges while respecting the democratic will of the Basque citizenry.
