Former Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu, of the PNV, has defended the advisability of calling general elections, considering it "absolutely necessary" to do so to "clarify the reality of institutional representation," he insisted in an interview with the newspaper 'El Correo'. In his opinion, the current situation goes beyond difficulties in gathering parliamentary support, as "it's no longer a matter of having difficulties getting the support of partners, but even within the PSOE-Sumar government," he assures.
In the interview published by ElConstitucional.es, Urkullu recalls that at the beginning of the legislature he already warned that Pedro Sánchez's Executive "was going to need all the votes from everyone who supported the investiture" and that this dependence would be maintained "all the time". In this regard, the former president of the Basque Country and current president of eAtlantic insists that the problem is not limited to the relationship with parliamentary partners, but also extends to the governmental coalition itself, reiterating that "it is not just that there are difficulties in having the support of the partners, but even within the PSOE-Sumar Government".
In this context, Urkullu criticizes the lack of legislative momentum and points out that "there are no legislative initiatives, everything is resolved with the validation of decree-laws. The alleged cases of corruption cause political and institutional disaffection. Stability is an exercise that must be attempted by those who assume governmental responsibility." Faced with this scenario, he considers it essential to act to order the political situation and maintains that "it is absolutely necessary to recompose or, rather, clarify the reality of institutional representation," which leads him to see an early election as "absolutely necessary."
