The Extraordinary National Council of the Comuns has approved this Thursday the candidacies of Comuns-Front Ampli for the four Catalan provinces for November 29, in an internal vote in which the definitive lists went ahead with 66% of votes in favor, 34% against and 20 blank votes.

The formation has presented a team headed by Ada Colau, who is listed as the head of the list, while Ernest Urtasun occupies the number two position for Barcelona. The candidacy is completed by Júlia Miralles in third place, Andrés García Berrio in fourth, Lucía Martín in fifth, and Joan Mena in sixth.

A team with female leadership and new faces

In a statement, the Comuns have defended that the list incorporates “female leadership”, combines “the experience of management at the head of institutions” with “the will for renewal” and also adds new incorporations. The formation has also stressed that it wants to project a candidacy with political continuity and internal renewal.

Aina Vidal, who was number 1 for Barcelona in the previous general elections, will not repeat as a candidate, although she will continue as spokesperson for the Comuns and “will actively participate in the campaign”. Nor will Gerardo Pisarello, one of the current spokespersons for Sumar in Congress, who in this case is the candidate for Mayor of Barcelona.

The names that complete the candidacy

The list includes profiles with institutional and organic experience in different administrations. Júlia Miralles was the number two for the Comuns in the last European elections; Andrés García Berrio is a Comuns deputy in the Parliament; Lucía Martín was a deputy in the Congress between 2016 and 2019, as well as housing councilor during Ada Colau's first term and also currently; and Joan Mena was a deputy in the Parliament and in the Congress, and is now a councilor in Sabadell (Barcelona).

In seventh place is the current Congress deputy Viviane Ogou, while the candidate for Girona, Júlia Boada, who obtained a seat in the 2023 general elections, will also repeat on the lists.

Girona, Lleida and Tarragona

For Tarragona, the candidacy will be headed by Ester Roca, a career civil servant in the Tarragona City Council. In Lleida, the list will be led by Montse Cortassa, a Comuns councilor in the Almacelles City Council (Lleida).

The formation has claimed “the need for a left that does not resign itself, that stands up to privileges and that wants to promote concrete answers to the daily problems of citizens”, among which it has cited the right to housing, the improvement of wages, the reinforcement of public services and the defense of democracy against the far right.
