A homeless man was found dead in the street early this Wednesday in Barcelona's Ciutat Vella district, amidst the cold snap affecting the city and various parts of Spain.
The Emergency Medical System (SEM) teams confirmed the discovery of the body, while the Mossos d'Esquadra will be in charge of the relevant investigation, although for the moment they cannot confirm any signs of criminality.
The Arrels Foundation, which provides assistance to homeless people, has identified the deceased as E., 57 years old, and has lamented his loss during these cold weather days. The organization has pointed out that, in Barcelona alone, five homeless people have died in the last five weeks, to which a similar case registered on Sunday in Badalona is added.
In light of this situation, Arrels has urged city councils to provide sufficient resources to protect people living on the streets from extreme cold
For its part, the Red Cross has activated a special operation in about twenty municipalities to alleviate the effects of the cold snap and has assisted nearly 300 people, of whom at least 106 have been housed in emergency public spaces.
