The Government of Catalonia has approved a credit supplement of 5.988 million euros with the aim of facing the budget extension, given the impossibility of moving forward with a new budget for the current fiscal year. This decision seeks to ensure the functioning of public services and address financial commitments already acquired.
According to the Catalan Executive, this budgetary expansion will allow covering essential needs in areas such as healthcare, education and social services, in addition to guaranteeing the payment of public staff salaries and contracts in force. The measure is adopted in a context of lack of sufficient parliamentary support, which has prevented the approval of new budgets.
From the Government it has been defended that the credit supplement is a “necessary and urgent” tool to avoid administrative paralysis. In this sense, they have underlined that without this economic injection it would be complicated to maintain the pace of spending required to sustain basic services.
Likewise, the Executive has insisted that it will continue working to achieve a political agreement that allows approving new accounts, although it recognizes that the current scenario remains complex. Meanwhile, this exceptional mechanism acts as a temporary solution to guarantee the financial stability of the Catalan administration.
