The brother of the Prime Minister, David Sánchez, has been sentenced to 9 years of disqualification from public office for malfeasance but has avoided the prison sentences requested by the popular prosecution. Likewise, the former president of the Provincial Council of Badajoz, Miguel Ángel Gallardo, will face the same sentence. In this context, Unidas por Extremadura has valued the sentence "positively" to "end cronyism."
Thus, the spokesperson for Unidas por Extremadura, Irene de Miguel, has pointed out: "In this land, clientelism and caciquism are an enormous scourge that affects many people." On the other hand, she described the requested prison sentences as "excessive" but that the disqualification represents "a quite adjusted penalty."
For all these reasons, she stressed that "we must end cronyism" and that the Popular Party "acts in the same way as the Socialist Party."
The investigation into the position in the Provincial Council
The Audiencia de Badajoz began the trial investigating Sánchez's hiring, which was adjourned for judgment after the president's brother declined to make use of his right to a final statement, while Gallardo reiterated his innocence. In this regard, he has been sentenced to 9 years of disqualification for malfeasance but there is no prison sentence.
The case analyzed the hiring of the Prime Minister's brother in 2017 as coordinator of activities for music conservatories and subsequently, as head of the Office of Performing Arts of the Provincial Council of Badajoz, and whether the position could have been created or adapted specifically for him, which would point to a possible case of cronyism and crimes of influence peddling and administrative malfeasance.
Let us remember that the complaint comes from the PP, Vox, Manos Limpias, Hazte Oír, Abogados Cristianos, the Liberum Association, and Iustitia Europa, who request sentences of up to six years in prison and 12 years of disqualification for Sánchez. For its part, the Prosecutor's Office requested the dismissal of the case, considering that there are "few indications and many conjectures."
