The general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, condemned this Tuesday that the Government sends “to beat” the teachers who demonstrate for public education and criticized the “verbal violence” used by the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
During a press conference at the Congress of Deputies, Belarra defended the teachers who are maintaining an indefinite strike in the region and conveyed her support to a group that, as she stressed, only demands better working conditions and more resources to be able to carry out their work.
Direct criticism of Ayuso and defense of public education
“We have heard real barbarities about the teachers, who are only defending public education. We have heard Mrs. Ayuso say that they are violent,” said the leader of the purple party, who will be Podemos’ candidate for the Community of Madrid in the next regional elections scheduled for May 2027.
Belarra has demanded that Isabel Díaz Ayuso defend public education and the teachers who, she said, are “on leave due to anxiety, on leave due to stress, because they cannot do their job well.”
The general secretary of Podemos insisted that “the only thing the ‘teachers’ are asking for are good working conditions and to be able to do their job well, that there are fewer children in each class to be able to attend to them well.” In the same vein, she added: “I know perfectly well that they are making an enormous extra effort to be able to attend to the children in good conditions, so I ask Ayuso for respect.”
Belarra accuses the Madrid Executive and reproaches the PSOE for police action
Belarra also warned that “the only violent thing” is the Government of Ayuso, whom she described as a president who, in her opinion, “takes everyone’s money instead of dedicating it to public services.”
The Podemos leader also attacked the PSOE, whom she reproached for presenting itself in the elections as a party that stops the right and the far right, while, she denounced, it acts “exactly the same as a right-wing government would, which is to send the police to beat teachers.”
“What we saw yesterday in the streets of this country is unacceptable, the police beating those who are defending the public education of their children, also of the children of the police, is unacceptable. We have never seen beatings to Mr. Vito Quiles, never. To Mr. Vito Quiles the police pat him on the shoulder and accompany him, escort him out of the situations he himself generates. This is not how fascism is stopped, this is the only way to feed it,” said Belarra.
