Metro de Madrid will implement starting next month of June payment with bank card, both physical and on mobile, in its smart turnstiles, a measure that seeks to modernize access to the subway and streamline the passage of travelers. This system will allow direct entry without the need to previously acquire a ticket or pass, simplifying the use of public transport.
The implementation will be carried out progressively throughout the network. The forecast is that the system will be operational in a significant number of stations before the visit of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled for the month of June, an event that is expected to significantly increase the volume of travelers.
The new access model is based on contactless technology and will allow the use of cards such as Visa, Mastercard or American Express, as well as mobile devices with digital payment systems. To this end, readers compatible with EMV technology and QR codes have been installed in more than 400 turnstiles, in addition to adapting the necessary software to manage transactions with banking entities.
One of the most outstanding aspects of the system is its ability to automatically calculate the most advantageous rate for the user. Through a management platform, known as BackOffice, the system records accesses made during a determined period and applies the most suitable cost, even grouping charges into a single payment.
This initiative is part of the Station 4.0 model promoted by Metro and is funded with European funds earmarked for the modernization of transport. In addition, it will be compatible with the current tickets of the Regional Transport Consortium, which guarantees a progressive transition for users.
