Reyes Maroto consolidates her position as PSOE candidate in Madrid and promises a "collective" project for 2027

Reyes Maroto will continue leading the socialist project for the 2027 municipal elections after defeating Enma López this Sunday in the PSOE of Madrid primaries. The socialist spokesperson in the City Council obtained the majority support of the militancy and, just one day after the result was known, defended that the party emerges "strengthened" from the internal process.

In a press conference prior to the Cibeles Plenary, Maroto thanked the participation of the members and highlighted that the primaries represent an exercise in "internal democracy" which, in her opinion, strengthens both the PSOE and the citizenry. Furthermore, she assured that the objective would now be to build a "collective" project in which "all sensitivities" of the organization have a place.

The socialist leader obtained 1,045 votes, compared to the 841 obtained by her rival, Enma López, a support that will allow her to repeat as a candidate for Mayor after having led the municipal candidacy in the 2023 elections.

After her victory, Maroto reiterated that her purpose is to build an alternative to the current municipal government and prepare the party to compete with real options in 2027. To do this, she defended a "transformative" project that, as she explained, aims to turn the PSOE into a force capable of recovering the Madrid City Council.

Defense of the primaries and message to the PP

Maroto also took the opportunity to distance herself from the Popular Party and defended the PSOE's primary system, while encouraging the popular party to apply the same model. Referring to José Luis Martínez-Almeida, she recalled that the current mayor "found out he was going to be a candidate through a media outlet," a comparison with which she vindicated the internal process held by the socialists.

An internal process marked by differences

The primary campaign was accompanied by moments of tension between the two candidates. Maroto even reproached Enma López for a "lack of loyalty" towards the socialist project after she announced her candidacy a few days before the Debate on the State of the City and on the eve of a PSOE Federal Committee.

During the campaign, the now candidate contrasted the idea of a "team" project against what she considered a more personal initiative driven by her rival. Before the vote, she already had an advantage in collecting endorsements, gathering 1,376 valid supports, compared to the 1,028 obtained by López. Despite the differences, the debate held between them before the primaries took place without personal confrontations and focused on presenting proposals for the city.
