The president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, has formally requested from the Ministry of Defense an inspection of the Russian cargo ship sunk off the Murcian coast in December 2024 to clarify if it was transporting nuclear components. The request comes after information suggesting that the vessel could have carried material related to reactors for submarines destined for North Korea.
The spokesperson for the regional Government, Marcos Ortuño, explained after the Governing Council that López Miras has sent a letter to minister Margarita Robles demanding “exhaustive and detailed” information about the incident. According to him, “there cannot be obscurantism” in a matter of these characteristics, especially due to the concern generated after international investigations into the Russian cargo ship.
During his appearance, Ortuño also warned about the increase in drug trafficking activity on the Murcian coasts after the report from the Department of National Security became known, which estimates more than 600 narco-boats operational in the Strait area. The spokesperson acknowledged that these types of vessels are already reaching points in the Region of Murcia such as Portmán or Mazarrón.
The autonomous Executive also charged against the central Government for the situation of the Civil Guard against drug trafficking. Ortuño denounced a lack of resources for the agents and demanded to immediately reinforce the resources destined for the Security Forces and Corps, in addition to toughening the Penal Code and officially recognizing their work as a high-risk profession.
