The president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, has conveyed to the head of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, his “great concern” about the situation being recorded on the Murcian coast, where in just four days several speedboats have reached the beaches transporting migrants in broad daylight. In a letter addressed to the President of the Government, López Miras denounces that these vessels have reached the shore “with total impunity” and without being intercepted by the State Security Forces and Corps.
The Murcian leader believes that these episodes demonstrate a lack of control over the activity of mafias dedicated to human trafficking and warns that they are generating “great social alarm and a feeling of insecurity.” For this reason, he demands immediate intervention to prevent these organizations from “continuing to operate freely” on the region's coast.
López Miras also focuses on the situation of the Civil Guard and the lack of resources to deal with these arrivals. As he explains in his letter, the regional government has been demanding a reinforcement of maritime resources allocated to the community for months, but this increase has not occurred. The Murcian president denounces that, currently, “the only patrol boat available” to respond to the arrival of these vessels remains out of service due to a breakdown, something he considers “unacceptable” given the extent of the coastline that must be monitored.
The president of Murcia links this situation with what happened in recent days on the beaches of Cartagena and accuses the Ministry of Interior of acting with “unforeseenness” despite repeated requests for reinforcement of personnel. Along with more agents, he demands an expansion of technological resources for surveillance through sensors, radars, and drones that allow anticipating this type of incident.
Demands to know the available resources on the coast
In his letter, López Miras asks Sánchez for “updated and real-time” information on the number of state maritime resources currently allocated to control the Murcian coasts, as well as their operational status. He also asks to know the Government's forecasts to correct existing deficiencies and determine what material resources and what number of personnel would be necessary to guarantee coastal surveillance.
The regional president considers it necessary to send “a clear and forceful signal” to mafias so they know that the Murcian coasts have “close and permanent” surveillance. In this regard, he places security as an “immediate priority” and expresses his fear that the migratory crisis registered in Ceuta could provoke new movements towards other areas of Spain.
"A clear and forceful signal must be sent now to these mafias that operate without scruples, so that they are aware that the coasts of the Region of Murcia are protected with close and permanent surveillance. Guaranteeing security must be an immediate priority," states the Murcian president.
López Miras warns that the thousands of immigrants who failed to remain in Ceuta could seek “alternative routes to leave” the autonomous city and that organizations dedicated to human trafficking could use their boats to transport them to other points of the national territory.
The head of the Murcian Executive also demands that his Government be periodically informed about the arrivals and the flow of dinghies, narco-boats, and other vessels linked to illicit activities that reach the coasts of the Region of Murcia. In his opinion, “without due transparency, it is difficult for mutual trust to exist” and cooperation between the different administrations is also hindered.
López Miras concludes his letter appealing to “institutional loyalty” and offers the collaboration of the regional Government to help find solutions to a situation that, as he emphasizes, exceeds the community's competencies. The Murcian president demands that Sánchez's response arrive “without the slightest delay” and stresses that the security and tranquility of residents and tourists visiting the Region are “inalienable and of the highest priority” issues.
