López Miras takes a step forward before the arrival of another boat with migrants in Murcia and convenes the Governing Council: "Awaiting a response from the President of the Government"

The president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, has once again demanded an immediate response to the arrival of another speed boat with migrant people on the Murcian coasts. The regional leader denounced this Wednesday via X that the vessel reached the coast “with total impunity” and, given the seriousness of the situation, announced that the Governing Council will meet this Thursday in Cartagena to address the latest arrivals.

López Miras has thus maintained pressure on the Government of Pedro Sánchez after having conveyed his “great concern” to the President of the Executive two days ago regarding the situation on the Murcian coast. In that letter, the head of the regional Executive had already warned that several speed boats had reached the beaches of the Region in just four days and had demanded an urgent reinforcement of the resources allocated to monitoring the coast.

Now, after a new arrival, López Miras has once again focused on the lack of resources of the Guardia Civil to confront organizations dedicated to human trafficking. “The dereliction of duty by the Government of Spain is inadmissible; it cannot be that the Guardia Civil continues without means to stop the mafias,” denounced the Murcian president.

The regional leader had already pointed out that the only patrol boat available to respond to this type of situation was out of service due to a breakdown, while demanding more personnel and technological resources, such as sensors, radars, and drones, to reinforce surveillance and allow for preventive action.

A response to the increase in arrivals

The call for the Governing Council represents a new move by López Miras to address from the Region a situation that he considers to exceed regional competencies. The Murcian president has insisted on the need to reinforce control of the coastline and to send a clear signal to the mafias that operate with fast boats to transport migrant people.

“We demand control of our coastline, this has to end now,” he wrote on X. López Miras also recalled that he is still awaiting a response from the President of the Government after having requested information from him about the state maritime resources available on the Murcian coasts, their operational status, and the forecasts to correct existing deficiencies.

In his letter, the president of Murcia had also warned that the situation generated by the migratory crisis in Ceuta could provoke movements towards other points of the national territory and had asked to maintain a “close and permanent” surveillance of the coasts of the Region. In his opinion, guaranteeing the safety of residents and tourists constitutes an “immediate priority”.
