The Ministry of Equality states that it will act against the veto on women as cofrades in the Holy Week of Sagunto (Valencia) and has stressed that these celebrations "have to be egalitarian". This was conveyed on the social network X by the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, who has publicly spoken out about the controversy, defending that there is no room for discrimination based on sex. "Holy Week has to be egalitarian", she pointed out, insisting that women must be able to participate on equal terms in this type of celebration.
The brotherhoods are not outside the Constitution and have to respect constitutionally recognized equality. Holy Week also has to be egalitarian. We are going to act. pic.twitter.com/uQFPbMxjG2

The case refers to a brotherhood in Sagunto that maintains restrictions on the incorporation of women as members, a practice that has motivated the intervention of the Government. Equality is now studying whether this exclusion may violate current regulations and what measures can be adopted in this situation.
The Ministry has pointed out that this action is not new, since since last February it had been analyzing possible measures in the face of situations of this type related to the participation of women in brotherhoods.
The issue of female inclusion in Holy Week has been generating protests and demands for years in different parts of Spain, where groups and affected women have been denouncing restrictions in certain brotherhoods that limit their access as members.
