The Ministry of Equality has convened this Tuesday a crisis committee after registering 13 murders due to gender violence in barely two and a half months of 2026, a figure that has raised institutional concern and has motivated the urgent review of the cases. The meeting brings together representatives of the Government, autonomous communities, the Prosecutor's Office, security forces, and experts in gender violence.
This committee, foreseen in the State Pact against Gender Violence, is activated in the face of significant upticks in murders and aims to individually analyze the latest cases. From the Ministry, they emphasize that it is about “analyzing case by case” to detect possible failures in protection systems and improve institutional response.
The figure of 13 women murdered so far this year confirms a concentration of crimes in a short period of time, which has led the Executive to reinforce coordination between administrations. Since 2003, when these data began to be collected, more than 1,200 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners.
During the meeting, key aspects are addressed such as the functioning of the VioGén police monitoring system, the assessment of victims' risk, the effectiveness of protection orders, and the coordination between courts, social services, and security forces.
The Ministry of Equality insists on the importance of using the available resources for victims, such as the phone 016, operational 24 hours and free.
