The Minister of Science and leader of the PSPV-PSOE, Diana Morant, has reproached Alberto Núñez Feijóo for continuing to defend Carlos Mazón a year after his resignation, in a political struggle that once again places the management of the dana of October 29, 2024 at the center of the debate. The tragedy left 234 fatalities in the province of Valencia.

Morant launched the message on her X social media account, where she stated that "he is still privileged, protected by his seat in Les Corts and supported by Feijóo". The socialist leader adds that the PP leader has come out "once again" to justify the former president.

The PSPV increases pressure and accuses the PP of sustaining impunity

From the PSPV-PSOE, also on social media, they have insisted that the PP maintains the same strategy a year later: protecting Mazón. In their message, the socialists argue that Feijóo has once again defended him and conclude with a deep political accusation: “they are accomplices of his impunity”.

The controversy was reactivated after Feijóo, in an interview on La Sexta, assured that it is “evident” that he has not “endorsed” the management of the DANA by the former president of the Generalitat Valenciana Carlos Mazón and that he has been “critical” both of the Generalitat Valenciana and, “above all”, of the central Government.

Feijóo also defended that, if it were to rain with that intensity again, “similar things” could be repeated. That statement does not clear up the political discussion about why Mazón did not resign immediately after the catastrophe.

Feijóo shifts responsibilities and argues that the central Government did not declare the emergency

Asked about that delay in the resignation, Feijóo replied that they had dealt with the matter “for a long time” and that they made “the corresponding decisions”. According to his version, the Government of Spain “disregarded” the DANA and did not declare the emergency.

The PP leader added that, if Mazón had resigned at that moment, it would have been unclear who would assume certain responsibilities. “It was not the time. The time was later,” he maintained.

The president of the PP was also asked if he endorsed Mazón's management during those days. His answer was emphatic: “It is evident that I have not endorsed that management,” he said, while reiterating his criticisms of both the Generalitat and the central Executive.

Tellado enters the dispute and compares Mazón's departure with other cases

The controversy was not limited to Feijóo. This Tuesday, the general secretary of the PP, Miguel Tellado, defended on TVE that Mazón “assumed his responsibilities and resigned” for his management of the DANA.

Tellado contrasted that case with that of the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, whom he accused of being “clinging to his seat” after the train accident in Urda (Toledo), with 69 fatalities. He also maintained that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, who appointed him, is not “willing to assume any of the responsibilities.”

The exchange leaves open the same political battle that has been ongoing for a year: who is responsible for the management of the DANA, how far the PP's responsibility extends, and what real effect, for now, Mazón's resignation has on his institutional role in Les Corts.
