The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, responded this Thursday night on the social network X to a comment from businessman Elon Musk (owner of X) and the company SpaceX, about Spain's decision on the extraordinary regularization of migrants in Spain.
Mars can wait. Humanity can’t. https://t.co/Oc4qAYtd3f
The clash began when an X user commented on the news of the regularization that will allow thousands of migrant individuals in irregular administrative situations to access residence and work permits in Spain. This user commented that the objective was "to defeat the far-right": "By legalizing 500,000 illegal immigrants under the pretext of defeating the far-right, Pedro Sánchez is taking off his mask. This is electoral engineering."
"The logic is simple: legalize half a million people, speed up their path to citizenship (which takes just two years for many), and you've effectively imported a massive, loyal voting bloc that is indebted to the left."
To this message, the millionaire replied with a brief "Wow," a tweet that achieved wide dissemination of the comment on the social network. However, and as we are already accustomed to receiving with this controversial and sensitive topic, **it is a hoax**.
Foreigners who regularize their status will not be able to vote in general or regional elections. According to the LOREG, Article 176 establishes that immigrants with legal residence can participate in municipal elections, but only if they meet certain requirements: having resided continuously in Spain for at least five years, there being a reciprocity agreement with their country of origin, being registered in the corresponding municipality, and being registered in the electoral roll. Consequently, migrants who now obtain legal residence thanks to the Royal Decree promoted by the Government will not have the right to vote in national elections, and could only do so in municipal elections if they meet all these conditions.
Sánchez's response was swift: "Mars can wait. Humanity can’t." With this, Sánchez wants to emphasize the humanitarian nature of this measure, without **electoral implications**. The president focuses on the fact that the measure only seeks to **guarantee rights and regularize** the **administrative situation** of thousands of migrants in Spain, while the hoaxes that continue to amplify fear keep spreading.
