Christmas is getting closer and closer and Madrid is beginning to prepare for one of the most special times of the year. The Christmas lights turn the streets of the city center and the neighborhoods of the capital into a perfect setting to stroll, take photos and enjoy a free plan with friends or family.

Every year, the lighting brings together thousands of people who travel through the city to discover its decorations. The commercial streets, the large squares and some of the most well-known places in Madrid become essential points for those who want to experience the Christmas atmosphere. Although the City Council still has to confirm the details of the 2026-2027 campaign, the official program places the Christmas celebrations between the end of November and Three Kings' Day, January 6.

When do the Christmas lights turn on in Madrid in 2026?

For the moment, the exact date and time of the turning on of Madrid's Christmas lights in 2026 are pending official confirmation. Municipal tourist information indicates that the Christmas campaign usually begins at the end of November.

Last year, the lights were turned on on November 22 and were celebrated in the Plaza de Cibeles. The inauguration included a light and sound show and a musical performance, making it one of the most anticipated events of the start of Christmas.

The schedules must also be consulted when the new program is published. In the previous campaign, the lights were turned on at 6:00 p.m. and remained lit until midnight from Sunday to Thursday and until 1:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with special hours on some dates. To find out the news, the definitive date and updated schedules, you can consult the official Tourism of Madrid website.

The best places to enjoy the Christmas lights

One of the most popular plans is to tour the center of Madrid to contemplate the lights and take advantage of the walk to visit the markets, buy gifts or have a drink in a cafeteria. Among the places that usually stand out during Christmas are:

  • Puerta del Sol: one of the busiest spots in the capital during the holidays and a usual place to enjoy the Christmas decoration.

  • Gran Vía: its lights and shop windows make this commercial street one of the most attractive for strolling and taking photographs.

  • Plaza Mayor: in addition to its lighting, it usually hosts the traditional Christmas market, with stalls selling ornaments and items for these dates.

  • Calle de Alcalá and Plaza de Cibeles: two emblematic areas to enjoy the festive atmosphere and the decorations that accompany the lighting.

Christmas lighting also reaches Madrid's neighborhoods, so it is not necessary to stay only in the center to enjoy it. In the 2025 campaign, the lighting extended to more than 240 locations in the city's 21 districts.

In addition to the lights, Madrid offers other plans to complete a Christmas afternoon, such as visiting nativity scenes, exploring the markets, or enjoying the ice rinks and activities organized for the whole family. The best option is to consult the official program before organizing the visit, as the dates, times, and details of the 2026-2027 Christmas campaign will be updated when the definitive program is announced.
