The PSOE spokesperson in the Madrid Assembly, Mar Espinar, has positioned the investigation into the purchase of the luxury penthouse in Chamberí as a possible turning point for Isabel Díaz Ayuso, during her intervention in ‘Cuestión de Escaños’, ElConstitucional TV's program.
Asked about the judicial investigation and who could have been behind the acquisition of the property by Planifica Madrid, a public company dependent on the Community, Espinar pointed directly to the unknown that she considers fundamental to clarify the case. “The key is who ordered the purchase of that penthouse”, she stated.
The socialist spokesperson assured that the PSOE-M has maintained a clear position from the beginning regarding the destination of the property. “That penthouse was a penthouse that Ms. Ayuso commissioned in her lifelong neighborhood, in front of her mother's house. There is no way to understand another version”, she maintained.
Espinar also questioned the different explanations offered about the intended use for the apartment. As she recalled, initially its use as offices was proposed despite its residential use, and later there was talk of using it for institutional events.
For the socialist leader, the episode adds to other controversies that have surrounded the Madrid president in recent years. “Ayuso's problem is that she has believed herself above good and evil”, said Espinar, who believes that until now the consequences of these controversies have ended up falling on other figures rather than on the president herself.
“During the pandemic, she did business with her brother and the one who went out the window was Mr. Casado. When her boyfriend was caught defrauding the Treasury and taking millions in commissions that allowed him to live in a double penthouse for a long time, the one who went out the window was the attorney general,” said the PSOE-M spokesperson during the program.
Espinar believes, however, that the penthouse controversy could change that dynamic. “There is nothing worse than taking Madrileños for fools,” she assured before accusing Ayuso of having thought that she could “do whatever she wants without getting caught or, if she gets caught, it won't cost her”.
The socialist spokeswoman closed her intervention by directly pointing to the wear and tear that, in her opinion, this latest controversy could cause. “I believe that this with the penthouse is over. This last penthouse has been the penthouse that broke the camel's back,” she declared.
Espinar linked this wear and tear with the daily situation of the region's citizens: “Madrileños are seeing how their lives are not improving, but that the president of the Community of Madrid is living like God at their expense.”
