Spanish national Alicia Armesto has been released by authorities in eastern Libya, where she had been held for a month. This was confirmed this Wednesday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares.

Armesto was traveling in a convoy with more than 200 people from different countries heading to Sirte to request passage from Libyan authorities and to deliver humanitarian aid.

“Good news. Spanish national Alicia Armesto has finally been released and is currently beginning her journey back to Spain to reunite with her family and friends,” Albares said in a statement.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Armesto will make a stopover in Istanbul, where personnel from the Spanish Embassy and Consulate in Turkey are waiting for her. Albares thanked “all the support” and the “intense efforts” made by the embassy and consulate in Libya, as well as by the central services of the Ministry.
