Iran warns that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed "until the end of the evil actions of the United States"

Iran has escalated the tone of the confrontation with the United States this Wednesday by announcing that the Strait of Hormuz "will remain closed" as long as US military operations continue in the area. The warning comes after Washington resumed the naval blockade against vessels transiting to and from Iranian territory, in full escalation between both countries.

In a statement released by the Tasnim agency, linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), this military body assured that the strategic passage "will remain closed until the end of the malicious actions of the United States". The text adds that "oil and gas exports from the region are for everyone or for no one", in reference to the maritime route through which, under normal conditions, about 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade circulates.

The US Central Command (Centcom) had confirmed shortly before a new round of bombings against dozens of Iranian military targets, near the strait and in coastal areas of the country. An offensive that, according to Centcom itself, lasted about seven hours, although Iran has denied that any vessel was hit during the attacks.

As explained by the US military body, the Army resumed the blockade against vessels transiting to and from Iran at 4:00 p.m. ET (8:00 p.m. GMT), as ordered by President Donald Trump. Through its 'X' account, the institution specified that "there are currently more than 20 US Navy warships and hundreds of military aircraft operating throughout the Middle East. US forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready."

Iranian response strikes three US allies

In addition to the strait, Tehran has claimed attacks against facilities linked to the United States in three Washington allied countries. In Kuwait, the IRGC claims to have destroyed what it describes as "the main American center for military preparation and support in West Asia", located in Mina Abdullah. In Bahrain, Iran claims to have destroyed a US command center and "the fuel tanks of the US Fifth Fleet in this country". In Jordan, according to Tasnim, the attacks have targeted the Al-Azraq base, where the US maintains F-18 fighters and military equipment.

The end of the truce and Trump's shift on compensation

This escalation comes after last week Donald Trump broke the ceasefire agreement he himself had signed with Iran on June 17, in response to what he considered persistent attacks by Tehran against ships sailing through Hormuz. On Monday, the US president announced the reestablishment of the naval blockade and a 20% compensation to be paid by third countries for the protection of their ships in the area. However, a day later he partially rectified that measure and indicated that he would replace it with "trade and investment agreements" with the Gulf States.
