Minister Albares contacts Mexico over the murder of Spanish student Claudia Tacoronte, investigated as femicide

The Mexican Prosecutor's Office is investigating the murder of Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, a 21-year-old Spanish student who was on a university exchange in the state of Morelos, as a possible femicide. The young woman, a native of the Canary Islands and a student at the University of Granada, was murdered last Saturday at the Casa de la Cultura de Cuautla, a town located about 100 kilometers south of Mexico City.

Given the seriousness of the event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, held a conversation this Wednesday with his Mexican counterpart, Chancellor Roberto Velasco, to address the circumstances of the crime. During the contact, Velasco conveyed to Albares the commitment of the Mexican authorities to the investigation and guaranteed him Mexico's "maximum involvement" to clarify this "terrible event," according to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs consulted by 'Europa Press'.

Albares thanked the Chancellor for the collaboration of the Mexican authorities and both agreed to maintain close communication as the investigations progress, with the aim of clarifying what happened and determining the corresponding responsibilities before Justice. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also indicated that the Spanish Embassy in Mexico and the Consulate General remain "fully mobilized and providing all assistance to Claudia's family."

The victim was identified by the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), while the state governor, Margarita González Saravia, confirmed that the authorities had established contact with the Spanish Consulate to accompany and provide support to the young woman's relatives. The University of Granada, through which Claudia was carrying out her exchange program, also publicly condemned the murder.

“As a public institution committed to the transfer of knowledge, the defense of human rights and the construction of critical thinking, the University of Granada reiterates the imperative need to eradicate all forms of violence against women,” the institution said in a statement.

The Morelos prosecutor, Fernando Blumenkron, confirmed the Spanish nationality of the victim and explained, as reported by 'EFE', that the young woman's body was found on Saturday in the Casa de la Cultura in Cuautla. The head of the state Prosecutor's Office then avoided offering details about the specific circumstances of the crime. "Yesterday we found this regrettable news about a Spanish girl, who we already know is of this nationality," he stated to local media.

The investigation was initially opened under the hypothesis of a possible femicide, in accordance with the protocol applied in Mexico for violent deaths of women. Authorities must now determine whether the murder was related to gender reasons. After learning of the case, the Morelos Prosecutor's Office contacted the Spanish Consulate in Mexico to facilitate consular assistance and communication with Claudia's family members.
