The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has defended this Saturday the need to “do whatever it takes to defend democracy” during the opening of the IV Meeting in Defense of Democracy, held in Barcelona. In his speech, he has stressed the importance of moving from concern to action.
“There is an old distinction between opening the window when something happens and going down to the street. Concern observes; responsibility acts”, Sánchez has stated before a fortnight of international leaders, among them the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. The head of the Executive has insisted that the objective of the meeting is not only to analyze the current challenges, but to offer concrete answers.
During his speech, Sánchez has pointed out that the meeting is structured around three main axes: the defense of multilateralism, the improvement of digital governance and the fight against inequality. Furthermore, he has reiterated his commitment that the next Secretary-General of the United Nations be for the first time a woman, in line with the need to advance towards greater representation and balance in global institutions.
