A projectile has impacted a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, according to information from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency, which is responsible for monitoring the safety of ships and sailors around the world. According to an alert issued by the British organization on its website, the vessel, whose flag has not been identified, was hit "by an unknown projectile while making an outbound transit" from the Strait of Hormuz, one of the main conflict points between the United States and Iran.

This accident has resulted in one casualty among the crew. The rest of the crew is being attended to by the Oman Coast Guard, stated the UKMTO, which has not provided details on the condition of the people aboard the vessel. For its part, the agency, which indicated that authorities are investigating what happened, did not provide the exact position of the impacted vessel, information it did specify in previous alerts, although the map accompanying the notice places the incident off the coast of Oman.

This attack in the Strait of Hormuz, which is still blocked due to the consequences of the Middle East war, occurs one day after the expiration of the 60-day deadline to achieve peace contemplated in the memorandum of understanding that the United States and Iran signed last June 17. This pact established the end of hostilities, the reopening of Hormuz, the lifting of the ban on the sale of Iranian oil in international markets, and the end of the blockade of Iranian ports and vessels, as key points. This agreement has not achieved its objectives, with both parties entrenched in their positions.

Tehran insists that it will not reopen the important maritime route until the U.S. complies with the commitments made in the memorandum, in addition to refusing to negotiate, with a tone more characteristic of a challenge to Washington. And for his part, Donald Trump uses military threats after a 12-day campaign of attacks in July and the economic pressures he now seems to be opting for to weaken the Islamic Republic.
