Spain will contribute 50 million additional euros to the NATO program aimed at financing the purchase of US weaponry for Ukraine. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, during the summit of Foreign Ministers of the Atlantic Alliance held in Helsingborg, Sweden.
The Spanish contribution will be integrated into the so-called Ukraine's Priority Requirements List (PURL), a mechanism promoted by NATO for European countries to acquire military equipment manufactured in the United States and subsequently transfer it to the Ukrainian Army. According to Albares, these 50 million are part of a broader package of 124 million in defense investments and programs recently approved by the Council of Ministers.
During the allied meeting, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andri Sibiga, also participated, in a context marked by international pressure to maintain military support for Kyiv against the Russian invasion. The NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, called for greater collective effort and regretted that “only six or seven” countries are currently bearing the main burden of military support for Ukraine.
Rutte cited the PURL program as an example, which is allowing the sending of material considered “crucial” for Ukrainian air defense, including ballistic missile defense systems. The Dutch leader also advocated for a “fairer” distribution of financial and military effort among all NATO partners.
The Contact Group for Ukraine, comprising more than 57 countries, committed last February to mobilize nearly 30 billion euros in new military aid for Kyiv throughout this year. However, the alliance has not yet reached that figure, with the United Kingdom and Germany being some of the countries that have allocated the most resources to Ukrainian military support so far.
