Another new La Liga season has begun with a somewhat atypical but good football first matchday. The Spanish league has been the first of the major European leagues to start, despite doing so in an unusual way as not all teams in the competition had a match this weekend.

The ball started rolling in Mendizorroza, the home of Deportivo Alavés, in an inaugural league match between Alavés and Getafe. At 7:30 PM on Saturday, August 15, the match and consequently La Liga would begin. The first half of the match was very even and somewhat bogged down. The match would continue like this until a Getafe defender was sent off, and with that, the home team's dominance began. Getafe held on as best they could, however, in the 72nd minute, Tenaglia made it 1-0 for the home side, leaving Getafe very much on the ropes. They tried to find an equalizer, but in two counter-attacks, Alavés killed the game, making it a final 3-0, with Mariano Díaz as the clear protagonist after one goal and two assists.

At 9:30 PM, Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano would face each other in a great match. Rayo would take an early lead, causing nervousness among Sevilla fans. The match was very even, so much so that in the 51st minute, Sevilla equalized from the penalty spot. Both teams were looking for the second goal, and it wasn't until the final stoppage time of the match that Sevilla made it 2-1 with another somewhat controversial penalty, which gave Sevilla their first three points.

On Sunday, August 16, a great match was played between newly promoted Racing de Santander and Villarreal. In a frantic first half, Racing came out with great impetus, even going up 2-0 in the 35th minute. However, Villarreal absorbed the blow well and responded quickly with two great goals, making it 2-2 at halftime. In the second half, chances continued, but there were no more goals, ending the match in a draw. In the night shift, Espanyol hosted Levante on the first matchday. The home team was superior throughout the match. This was reflected in the scoreboard, with a 3-0 final score for the "periquitos."

Real Madrid and Barcelona in friendlies

While the League begins, the top teams of the competition continue their preseason playing friendlies, due to the late incorporation of players who reached the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup. Real Madrid continues its unbeaten streak this preseason, winning 0-3 against Schalke 04. Also in this match, the new Real Madrid signings and the entire squad could already be seen in full, showing what Madrid will be like this season. Mbappé, Huijsen and Carlos Espí were the goal scorers of the white victory before their League debut next weekend.

For its part, Barça also played another friendly, against Swiss Basel. Barça also came out with a large part of the starters and new signings, and that was noticeable as the final score was 2-5 in favor of the culés. Lamine Yamal also had his first minutes of the season, and it was already clear what Barça will be like this season.
