The tax cuts applied during the energy crisis will begin to disappear from next June 1. The VAT on electricity, natural gas, and pellets will return to the usual rate of 21% after the National Institute of Statistics (INE) confirmed that energy prices have moderated compared to last year. The ordinary rate of the Special Electricity Tax will also be recovered, although tax breaks on fuels will remain in force for the time being.

The withdrawal of these measures comes after it was known that inflation decreased two tenths in April to stand at 3.2%. The INE considers that prices have contained their escalation during recent months, thus activating the automatic mechanism foreseen by the Government to progressively eliminate the tax aids approved during the sharp increase in energy prices.

In food, eggs continue to be one of the products that have increased the most in price, although their annual rise moderated in April to 14.7%. Beef also remains among the foods with the highest price increase, with a year-on-year advance of 13.3%. In addition, fresh legumes and vegetables registered an increase of 5% in just one month, while fresh fruits decreased by 2.5% in April.

Only five food categories became cheaper in the last year. Oils and fats led the declines with a decrease of 5.4%, followed by fresh fruits (-2.8%), sugar (-2.5%), potatoes (-1.2%) and pork, which slightly reduced its price by 0.3%. Despite this moderation in some products, the shopping basket continues to maintain high pressure on many Spanish families.
