Aagesen calls for a state pact against the climate emergency and sends a message to the PP: "The policy of no to everything does not work"

The third vice-president of the Government and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, defended this Thursday, during an interview granted to 'Cadena SER', the need to reach a State pact against the climate emergency. The minister announced that the Executive will convene, after the summer, a convention with social agents and political parties to approve this agreement and took the opportunity to invite the Popular Party to join the initiative. "The policy of no to everything does not work," she assured.

The head of Ecological Transition linked the urgency of the agreement to the situation of forest fires recorded this year. According to data provided during the interview, Spain has already accumulated 108,000 hectares burned in 2026, a figure that quadruples the affected area in the same period of the previous year.

Aagesen pointed out that around 1,900 fires have been recorded so far this year, although she clarified that not all have reached the same level of severity. However, she warned that large fires are affecting increasingly larger areas and present greater complexity due to climatic conditions.

Given this scenario, the minister asked the autonomous communities to reinforce their prevention, surveillance, and extinction devices, and adapt their resources to the new context marked by rising temperatures and the effects of climate change. "We must act against climate change, which greatly aggravates fires and makes them increasingly complicated," she said. 

In addition, Aagesen defended the need to improve the adaptation of public services to extreme heat episodes. In this regard, she highlighted the aid approved for the installation of air conditioning systems in educational centers and hospitals, measures whose execution corresponds to the autonomous communities.

The third vice-president also addressed the international energy situation and assured that Spain has a "more prepared" position than other European countries to face the volatility of the gas market derived from geopolitical tension. As she explained, the main impact for Spain is being transferred to the price of energy rather than to possible supply problems.
