Aagesen holds the Autonomous Communities responsible for fire prevention and accuses the PP of "leaving the population unprotected" for pacts with Vox

The third vice-president and minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, this Monday hardened her criticism against the Partido Popular for its management of the climate emergency. The minister has assured that the regional governments supported by Vox leave the population in a situation of greater vulnerability and has insisted that the fight against forest fires must be addressed throughout the year and not only when the flames begin to spread.

During an interview on RNE, Aagesen recalled that preventive work against fires corresponds to the autonomous communities and has defended that planning must be maintained permanently. In her opinion, waiting for the months of greatest risk to activate measures means arriving late to a phenomenon that every summer becomes more complex.

In that context, the vice-president has attacked Santiago Abascal's party, which she has accused of denying scientific evidence about climate change. For Aagesen, the true "fanaticism" does not lie in environmental policies, but in denialism, a stance that, as she has warned, ends up weakening the capacity to respond to fires. "Governing with denialists is to leave the population unprotected," she stated.

The minister explained that meteorological conditions, together with the accumulation of plant fuel and low humidity, favor increasingly difficult-to-control fires. In her opinion, this reality forces the reinforcement of prevention policies and the coordination of the actions of all administrations.

Aagesen also took the opportunity to reproach the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, for continuing not to support the State pact against climate change proposed by the Government a year ago. The vice-president regretted that that proposal was then described as a "smokescreen" and has warned that the burned area this year multiplies several times that recorded in 2025. "There is no time to wait. It is time to act," she concluded.
