The Compromís deputy assigned to the Sumar Group, Alberto Ibáñez, responded this Wednesday to the doubts raised by some PP leaders about postal voting, and maintained that, if their leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, harbors suspicions about this system, “he cannot be a candidate”.
Ibáñez also alluded to Núñez Feijóo's time at the head of Correos, stating: “Perhaps he is telling us that when he ran Correos, someone rigged the elections. I don't know, perhaps the PP speaks from experience”. In his opinion, these doubts are a “provocation” from the right so that housing is not discussed, which he considers the real “electoral campaign debate”.
The census, the Democratic Memory Law, and the right to vote
In a press conference at the Congress, asked about Minister Félix Bolaños's warning that the electoral census will be “altered” if the Supreme Court maintains the precautionary measure on registrations in the Electoral Census of Absent Residents of those who obtained nationality through the Democratic Memory Law, the Compromís deputy supported those statements.
Ibáñez defined this situation as an attempt to “take away the right to vote from Spaniards” and defended that “any Spaniard” and “any person who has the right” should be able to “vote freely”. In that context, he ironized about Vox: “I don't know how the Vox members sleep at night, they will pray a lot to Covadonga and Santiago, I suppose, for forgiveness”.
Compromís asks to reactivate the parliamentary commission on the DANA
Furthermore, Alberto Ibáñez announced that his party has committed to the victims of the DANA to try to ensure that the parliamentary commission that investigated the management of the tragedy, which left 235 dead in 2024, is re-established in the next legislature.
The deputy acknowledged that Valencians are “particularly hurt” that the investigation has been interrupted with the dissolution of the Cortes, without time to present conclusions after “immense work” during the last year. Therefore, he explained that Compromís has committed to victim associations that the first measure in the new legislature will be to “register the reactivation of the commission”.
In his opinion, this body must be re-established because it is still necessary to “shed light” where there is still “too much darkness”, “not only for what happened but for what continues to happen, keeping Mr. (Carlos) Mazón in his seat”, referring to the former president of the Generalitat.
The decree-law for the victims of the DANA, awaiting validation
In addition, Ibáñez recalled that the Permanent Deputation of the Congress will have to validate in the coming weeks a decree-law of measures for the victims of the DANA, among which he highlighted the one that seeks to prevent 3,000 affected people from having to return partially or totally aid received in recent years.
“This is very important because climate change is upon us, we have seen it in the DANA, we can see it shortly with 'El Niño' and I believe that public administrations must rise to the occasion”, he concluded.
