The Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, affirmed this Wednesday that the State is deploying "all efforts" to guarantee security in Ceuta and, as she underlined, "in fact, security has been reinforced" in view of the sexual assaults registered in the autonomous city.
Redondo spoke in the corridors of the Congress, in response to questions from journalists about whether the situation can improve in the short term, after the Permanent Commission of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) quantified at 37 the preliminary proceedings opened for crimes of sexual assault in Ceuta after the massive entry of migrants at the end of July.
The data on sexual violence and the minister's diagnosis
The head of Equality also focused on the figures of sexual violence registered throughout the country, and pointed out that "there have been 4,800 sexual assaults in the first quarter of this year", a statistic that, according to the minister, reflects the magnitude of the problem.
In this context, Ana Redondo warned that "we have a problem as a society and that is that machismo is growing and denialism is gender violence", in an assessment linking the increase in sexist violence with the growth of machismo and denialism.
The advance of machismo and the deterioration of social consensus
The Minister of Equality has maintained that sexist violence is "transforming a society that was convinced that the fight against gender and sexist violence was a matter for everyone and was a matter for citizenship and democracy".
As Ana Redondo added, "unfortunately that has been broken", alluding to the setback that, in her opinion, the social consensus around the fight against gender violence is experiencing.
