Elma Saiz, Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, has called for the resignation of the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, following the controversy surrounding Ayuso over the purchase by the regional government of a "luxury" penthouse in the Chamberí district. She also criticized the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, for his "deafening silence" on this issue.
"I believe the time for explanations has passed. Ms. Ayuso what she has to do is resign," Saiz maintained in her statements this Tuesday. In the same way, the minister assured that she was "powerfully struck by Mr. Feijóo's deafening silence on this matter," and also defended that reinforcing public services and addressing the consequences of fires does not involve this type of real estate operation.
Elma Saiz continued her statements by adding: "Strengthening public services, fighting climate change, and mitigating the effects of fires is not done by buying and selling luxury penthouses in your lifelong Madrid neighborhood." This controversy arises after the Community of Madrid confirmed the acquisition of a 485-square-meter penthouse in the Chamberí district for Ayuso to use as a temporary office during the renovation of the Real Casa de Correos, headquarters of the regional government.
Following criticism from the opposition, the president of the Community of Madrid announced this Sunday that the property will definitively be put up for sale, along with four other assets. Furthermore, she assured that the more than 20 million euros she expects to obtain will be allocated to the reconstruction of areas affected by fires.
