Alberto Núñez Feijóo has raised the tone of his criticism of the Government of Pedro Sánchez during his visit to a photographic exhibition dedicated to the former president Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo in Ribadeo (Lugo). The leader of the PP has assured that Spain is going through a “destituting” moment and has accused the Executive of promoting a “constitutional mutation through the back door” that, according to his diagnosis, is deteriorating the institutions and weakening legal guarantees.
Feijóo has placed the management of the migratory crisis in Ceuta as one of the examples of the attitude he reproaches the Government for, which he has accused of remaining “absent, inert and indifferent” in the face of issues such as the security, integrity, and sovereignty of Spain. To reinforce his criticism, he has resorted to the figure of Calvo-Sotelo: “Can you imagine President Calvo-Sotelo filming some videos about his favorite summer songs on a sofa in the Palacio de la Moncloa when a part of Spanish territory is being occupied?”, he has posed.
The president of the PP has argued that the Executive is immersed in a process of “rupture” and “deconstruction” of the constitutional system of 1978 and has denounced its intention to substitute the current autonomous state for a model of “plurinationality” of a confederal nature. He has also questioned the parliamentary situation of the Government, which he reproaches for governing “without Parliament, without budgets and abusing the Royal Decree Law.”
In his speech, Feijóo has also attacked the strategy of the Executive and its partners to, according to him, “delegitimize” institutions such as the Crown, the Judiciary or the State Security Forces and Corps. In his opinion, this dynamic seeks to divide citizens into “two irreconcilable sides” and turn the next general elections into a plebiscite.
The popular leader has also criticized the behavior of some members of the Government, which he considers “tavern-like” for their attacks on political adversaries, private citizens and even the Crown, in a reference to the minister Óscar Puente. In the face of this scenario, he has claimed the PP as an alternative of “renewal and national reconstruction”, based on the “harmony and unity of the Spaniards”.
During his visit, Feijóo has praised the figure of Calvo-Sotelo as one of the “fundamental statesmen of democratic Spain” and has contrasted his way of understanding politics with the current situation. As he pointed out, while the leaders of the Transition opted for “understanding, fraternity and harmony”, now there are those who “want to build walls between citizens.”
The leader of the PP concluded by reaffirming his commitment to a political change that, in his opinion, is demanded by a broad majority of Spaniards. “My commitment, I affirm it once again today, is to recover that good politics for the benefit of all Spaniards”, he stated.
