The leader of the Popular Party and candidate for the Presidency of the Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has defended his “tactical agreement” with Vox in the Senate to “try to maintain an absolute majority” in the Upper House and respond, according to his diagnosis, to the “coalition of desperate” promoted by the PSOE, Frente Amplio and other left-wing forces.
In an interview on Onda Cero, Feijóo stated that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has “changed the board” with this left-wing pact and considered it “essential” to respond, because, in his opinion, “the rules of the game have changed”. “Mr. Sánchez has changed the board and, therefore, we must respond to a move by Sánchez and all his partners,” he affirmed.
The popular leader added that “not responding” would have been an “irresponsibility” and confessed that he would not have closed this pact with Vox if the PSOE had not signed a coalition with Frente Amplio and other territorial left-wing parties.
PP and Vox, “different” but coordinated in the Upper House
Feijóo also explained that his pact with Vox is an expected response by the majority of Spaniards who want a change in Spain, and pointed out that, unlike the PSOE's pact with other left-wing forces, the acronyms of PP and Vox do not disappear.
The popular leader stressed that the PP and Vox are “different” parties, and remarked that his formation will continue to be a reformist party. “There is still a reformist center-right party, which is the Popular Party, and a more disruptive party, which is Vox,” he pointed out, before defending that the objective is to find a “meeting point” to try to maintain an absolute majority in the Upper House.
In this context, he explained that what both formations have done is an “essential coordination” to maintain the possibilities of an absolute majority in the Upper House, and insisted that it is a “responsible response” to the strategy of the bloc that supports the President of the Government, in reference to the “coalition of desperate”.
Sánchez, “a conflictive person”, according to the PP leader
During the interview, Alberto Núñez Feijóo described Pedro Sánchez as “a conflictive person” within the Government and with his collaborators, and assured that the head of the Executive likes “conflict in Spain”. “We are facing an emergency situation. The need for political change in Spain. Whoever puts a spoke in the wheel of political change will assume their responsibility,” he warned.
One month before the general elections, the president of the Popular Party has stated that the regeneration Spain needs “involves trying to ensure that Sánchez is not even a protagonist in the next legislature.”
