The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, reacted this Sunday to the altercations registered in Bilbao before the 2026 World Cup final, where a giant screen installed by the PP to follow the match between Spain and Argentina was the object of an attempted sabotage.
The events occurred minutes before the start of the final, when a group of participants in a march called by Zazpi Baietz in support of the Basque national team went to Doña Casilda park, where the PP had installed a giant screen to follow the match. According to information disseminated by 'Europa Press', several attendees knocked down fences, threw objects and damaged part of the installation, temporarily interrupting the broadcast after pulling out some cables. However, the signal could be restored shortly after thanks to the intervention of the organization.
During the incidents, the Ertzaintza maintained a security device deployed in the area and identified about twenty people, among them one investigated.
After learning what happened, Feijóo published a message on the social network 'X' in which he accused those responsible of trying to "spoil the party", although he stressed that they did not manage to prevent fans from enjoying the match. The popular leader also took the opportunity to show his support for the PP spokesperson in the Bilbao City Council, Esther Martínez, for her actions during the altercations. "Because Spain is very great and Esther Martínez too", wrote the president of the popular party, who also conveyed his recognition to the Popular Party of the Basque Country before concluding his message with a "Long live Spain!".
