The political secretary and MEP of Podemos, Irene Montero, has denied that her party will integrate into Frente Amplio, although she has defended that the alliance she maintains with the spokesperson for ERC in Congress, Gabriel Rufián, remains open to other political forces.

In an interview on TVE, Irene Montero has assured that her party will continue to seek formulas for understanding with other formations, while highlighting that the progressive space demands agreements between different sensibilities.

“We are going to continue talking and trying all forms of collaboration,” said the Podemos leader, who added that progressive people “are asking for agreements” in which “common ground and forms of cooperation” are sought.

Montero has insisted on this idea and has maintained that “that is what we are doing,” while again defending primaries as “the best way to reach agreements,” in contrast to an “infinite loop” that, she said, “leads nowhere.”

The agreement with ERC, open to new incorporations

The Podemos leader has highlighted the agreement with ERC on which they will work and has explained that this space “is open to anyone who wants to join.” In this framework, she stressed that the fact that things do not develop “as some people would like” does not imply, in her opinion, that they are not being done “with the best will.”

Previously, Irene Montero had defended the alliance with the republican formation as a candidacy that represents “that left-wing majority,” and had avoided commenting on the “open door” that Frente Amplio had offered her to join the confluence with Movimiento Sumar, Comuns, Más Madrid, and Izquierda Unida.

“I prefer my silence because I believe it is what can best contribute to things going well,” she concluded in that intervention.

Podemos will work with Gabriel Rufián throughout the territory

In that same context, Irene Montero has indicated that Podemos will “contribute” to the ERC candidacy and will form a “team” with Gabriel Rufián “throughout the territory” for the general elections.

The Podemos MEP has also stressed that the space she shares with the republican spokesperson is open to other parties joining, including those of Frente Amplio, and has defended that progressive people were asking for a “framework of collaboration between different” which, she said, has already been achieved with the alliance with ERC.

“We must continue working so that many more people are there and so that this candidacy represents that left-wing majority,” Irene Montero added.
