IU urges King Felipe VI to "do his job" and demands that he contact King Mohamed VI: "The country that has attacked us"

"If we have a head of state we don't vote for, he should obviously do his job as head of state," Izquierda Unida (IU) spokesperson, Enrique Santiago, said this Friday in an intervention on 'Telecinco', where he asked Felipe VI to contact the King of Morocco, Mohamed VI, to try to de-escalate the tension generated by the migratory crisis in Ceuta. The IU leader considers Morocco's actions to constitute an "attack" and has reproached the Spanish head of state for not having, so far, held a conversation with his Moroccan counterpart. "He is taking too long," he said.

Santiago, also a Sumar deputy, has argued that this communication should have taken place "from the very first moment," especially given that they are two neighboring countries with a consolidated relationship. In his opinion, Felipe VI should have assumed an active role as head of state in the face of the situation. "At this point," he reproached, the King has not "done what he had to do in this crisis," which would be to contact the head of state. Santiago stated: "If we have a head of state we don't vote for, he should obviously do his job as head of state."

In parallel, the IU spokesperson has argued that Spain must guarantee the rights of the people who remain in Ceuta and comply with legal obligations regarding migration. In particular, he has called for protection for those who may be in a vulnerable situation or meet the requirements to receive international protection.

To determine the situation of each person, Santiago considers it necessary to draw up "as quickly as possible" a census of the migrants remaining in the autonomous city. However, he warned that the process cannot be resolved immediately. "That's not going to happen overnight," he acknowledged.

The IU leader also considered that the situation facing Ceuta is unsustainable due to the "burden" the city bears and criticized the stance of PP and Vox regarding a possible immediate and generalized return of migrants, which he described as an "absurd position."
