The personal doctor of the former president of the Generalitat, Jordi Pujol, has warned of his delicate state of health before his upcoming judicial appearance. Doctor Jaume Padrós has assured that his patient suffers from degenerative and progressive diseases, which has caused a deterioration that, although “stable”, is worse than that of previous months.
According to what he explained in an interview, this worsening especially affects his cognitive abilities. Padrós has indicated that Pujol has memory problems and difficulties in articulating a coherent narrative or maintaining an argument, which would compromise his ability to defend himself normally in a judicial process.
The doctor has been especially critical of the possibility that he might have to travel to Madrid to testify in the Audiencia Nacional. He has described this option as "very cruel" and has suggested that it could be interpreted as a lack of confidence by the court in the medical reports already carried out in Barcelona.
Despite everything, Padrós has clarified that he is not part of the organization of the trip nor of the legal strategy, which corresponds to the family and the legal team of the former president. Likewise, he has stressed that Pujol's will is to attend the trial, although he has warned that forcing him to do so in his state could even raise doubts from the point of view of fundamental rights.
