The emeritus king, Juan Carlos I, has returned to the center of public debate after an interview granted to the French media 'Le Figaro', in which he launches criticism at the Executive of Spain and points directly to the president, Pedro Sánchez. From Abu Dabi, where he resides since 2020, the former monarch states that “with the current Government things must be very difficult for my son”.
During the interview, Juan Carlos I mentions that his son Felipe VI would have tried to delay the launch of his memoirs to avoid its coincidence with the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the dictator Francisco Franco.
It also addresses personal issues, such as his relationship with Diana de Gales, about which he denies any sentimental link. Likewise, reference is made to family estrangement, noting that he barely maintains contact with Queen Sofía de Grecia nor with his son, and that his closest relationship is with his grandson Froilán.
Reactions have not been long in coming. In Congress, the spokesperson for ERC, Gabriel Rufián, has responded harshly to the words of the emeritus: "Give back the money".
