This Tuesday marks one year since the resignation of Carlos Mazón as president of the Generalitat Valenciana, a resignation that came five days after the state funeral for the victims of the DANA of October 29, 2024, in a context of growing political and social pressure, and after a day in which he received shouts of “murderer” and “rat” from victims' relatives.
The situation of the then head of the Consell had become untenable since the tragedy, in which the province of Valencia suffered 234 deaths, and in which his absence during the most critical hours of the DANA day marked the course of events, after, despite the red alert for intense rains, he ate for several hours with a journalist and did not arrive at the meeting of the Integrated Operational Coordination Center (Cecopi) until 8:28 p.m., when most of the victims had already drowned.
A resignation demanded for months
Since that day, in every control session in Les Corts Valencianes, the opposition demanded that he resign or that his own party, the Popular Party (PP), remove him, while in the streets massive demonstrations with the slogan “Mazón resignation” took place, called by social groups and later reinforced by victims' associations, once constituted.
All of this, along with the details that became known about what he did that October 29 as the judicial investigation progressed, led to Mazón finally announcing his departure on November 3, 2025, in an institutional statement, in which he admitted that he had made “mistakes” in the DANA, although he denied acting out of “bad faith” and defended that he had not been informed of the real extent of the catastrophe.
After his resignation, Mazón remained in office until, at the end of November, Les Corts Valencianes elected his right-hand man, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, as his replacement, with the votes of the PP and Vox. Pérez Llorca, until then the popular spokesperson and general secretary of the PPCV, also assumed the leadership of the party, now under an interim management.
The seat, the immunity and the office in Alicante
Despite having resigned as president, Carlos Mazón did not renounce his seat as regional deputy and has maintained his seat in Les Corts, where he moved from the front row to seat 97 in the last row, while the popular group assigned him the spokesperson position in the Regulation Commission, a position that entails a gross monthly supplement of 634 euros.
Keeping the seat allows him to remain immune, so the judge of Catarroja who is investigating the criminal case cannot directly indict him, a measure that the magistrate requested this year from the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community and which it rejected, before the Audiencia de Valencia allowed Mazón to appear in the macro-case.
In addition, the Generalitat has opened in Alicante, in application of the law of the Statute of former presidents, the Office of support for former president Mazón, in which he has an advisor, his former chief of staff José Manuel Cuenca, and a driver.
Victims demand he leave politics
The main associations of DANA victims have since maintained that Carlos Mazón must leave his seat, abandon politics, and appear before the judge of Catarroja, while one of these entities has asked the Constitutional Court to annul his immunity.
The monthly protests called around the 29th have hardened their message, and the initial slogan of “Mazón resignation” has given way to “Mazón to prison,” to which has also been added the request for the entire Valencian Government to resign, considering that Juanfran Pérez Llorca has kept officials whose “negligence,” according to the associations, turned a natural catastrophe into a “human catastrophe.”
Zero initiatives in Les Corts
The parliamentary activity of Carlos Mazón as a backbench deputy has been practically nil, according to the Chamber's search engine, which yields no results on parliamentary initiatives presented by the former leader of the Valencian PP. There are no records of questions, requests for documentation, interventions in plenary, or actions in committee.
Since he announced his resignation on November 3, 2025, Mazón has only intervened once in Les Corts Valencianes, specifically on November 11, 2025, when he appeared before the DANA investigation committee, one week after announcing his resignation and still as acting president. Since then, he has not spoken again in the hemicycle.
