The agitator and disseminator of conspiracy theories on unverified channels such as Telegram or YouTube, Pilar Baselga, will stand trial on March 12 in a Madrid court for having spread a hoax about Begoña Gómez, wife of the President of the Government, which portrayed her as a transgender woman with a supposed false birth name.

The accusation is based on statements made by Baselga in late 2022 on the channel DistritoTV. In them, he falsely claimed that Begoña Gómez is a transgender woman and her real name was "Begoño". These claims led to mockery, derogatory comments, and hate messages on social media, fueling transphobic discourse and attacks directed at both Gómez herself and the LGTBI community.

Disinformation History

Baselga, known for spreading hoaxes and conspiracy theories, has been investigated following a complaint, and in her previous court appearance in April 2024, she exercised her right to remain silent. The network DistritoTV even issued a written and on-air apology for the statements made on the political debate program, Los Intocables, which were part of the accusations included in the case.

The trial scheduled for March will take place in a court on Julián Camarillo street in Madrid, where Baselga will have to answer for the dissemination of these falsehoods that, according to the prosecution, directly affected the personal life and reputation of the head of government's wife.

The spread of hoaxes is a common practice in Pilar Baselga's public career. Beyond the hoax about Begoña Gómez, she has propagated other widely debunked conspiracy theories, such as the so-called "Bar España", a supposed satanic network with no basis or evidence whatsoever. She has also spread falsehoods about electoral fraud, disinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and alarmist messages about non-existent events. This pattern of disinformation has been repeated on her Telegram channels and other platforms, and has been debunked on numerous occasions by official fact-checkers such as 'Maldita.es'.
