The general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, has lashed out this Tuesday against the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, for questioning the postal vote, statements that, in her opinion, show that the leader of the Popular Party (PP) "is concerned that people vote" and therefore has "a problem with democracy."

In a press conference at the Congress, Belarra stated that Ayuso "does not like" that descendants of Spanish exiles can vote, because, as she pointed out, they remember "that Mrs. Ayuso's political grandparents are the ones who tried to exterminate their families."

Ayuso warns about postal voting and censuses

The Podemos leader's criticisms come after Isabel Díaz Ayuso asked voters "not to even think about voting by mail" in the general elections on November 29, and assured that her party will be "very attentive" to a possible "adulteration" of the censuses due to the application of the so-called grandchildren's law or the recent regularization of immigrants.

Belarra interpreted these words as a warning sign about the state of the democratic system, and stated that "what is at stake here is democracy" and that "questioning the democratic system is the worst disservice and the hardest blow" that can be dealt to "a system that already has significant holes."

Criticism also of the judicial system

The purple leader, who aspires to be Podemos' electoral candidate in the Madrid regional elections, also criticized Ayuso for "never saying anything" about the judicial system, where, in her opinion, lies "the biggest democratic problem" in Spain.

"What worries her is that people can vote, because Mrs. Ayuso's problem is with democracy and with rights," concluded Ione Belarra.
